Missionary Report: Deportation from China by Japanese Forces, circa 1940s
Scope and Contents
Irene Hanson's written account of her deportation from China in 1942 as result of Japanese occupation. After being placed under house arrest in Shandong for some months, the Japanese government came to an agreement with the United States government to exchange nationals. Hanson and a large cohort of other missionaries were placed aboard the S.S. Conte Verde and sent to Laurenco Marques (now known as Maputo, Mozambique), at which point the trade of American and Japanese nationals took place, with Irene and the rest of the missionaries boarding the S.S. Gripsholm enroute for New York City.
