Scope and Contents

This collection contains publications, newspaper clippings, photographs, and campaign materials collected by Loren Hicks relating to the political career of Mark O. Hatfield. The majority of these materials can be dated to Hatfield's first and second terms as Governor of the state of Oregon. This collection includes several documents signed by Mark O. Hatfield. Newspaper articles record political milestones in Hatfield's career, such as his decision to run for Governor of the state of Oregon and his subsequent victories. Photographs include standard portraiture, diplomatic visits, as well as candid shots of the governor. Campaign materials include bumper stickers, donation envelopes, and pamphlets.

Biographical / Historical

Loren Hicks was born on November 7, 1919, in Salem, Oregon. He graduated from Willamette University in 1942 and entered the U.S. Army soon thereafter. Hicks served in the European theater, and rose to the rank of captain. As a member of the Army Reserve, he later attained the rank of colonel. Upon returning to the United States, Hicks enrolled in the Willamette University College of Law, graduating in 1949. He practiced law in Salem for the next decade.

From 1959 until 1965, Hicks served as legal counsel for Governor Mark O. Hatfield. In 1960, Hicks was appointed circuit court judge for Marion County. Hicks was then appointed to the newly created position of State Court Administrator in 1972, a position that he held until his retirement in 1980.

In 1995, Hicks was honored by the Salem Chamber of Commerce with a Distinguished Service Award, and in 1997 he was deemed a Distinguished Alumni by Willamette University. Hicks died April 26, 2014.
