Biographic Note
Water color artist Elmer Edwin Young studied medicine for one year at Willamette University before leaving Salem to pursue a career in art. For a time, Young worked odd jobs while attending the Chicago Art Institute. In 1921, Young began teaching at the University of Minnesota. Young established the Willamette University Art Bank in 1971 as a way to honor his late wife Verda Karen Young '31. Through the Art Bank, students, faculty, and staff could rent paintings selected by Young to adorn their work areas and residences.
