The Belknap family papers consist of a commencement program for The College of Oratory at Willamette University from 1908 featuring Clark R. Belknap; a photocopy of a newspaper clipping about the Willamette University women's basketball team featuring Carrie and Stella Belknap; a newspaper clipping about Clark Belknap becoming Official Orator for the City of Seattle; a cabinet photograph featuring Clark Belknap and the rest of the Willamette University debate team; and a typewritten letter addressed to Harold describing the life of L. F. Belknap, including references to Belknap Hall at Willamette University.

Biographical / Historical

The Belknap family respresented in this collection consists of direct descendants of Jesse Belknap, born in New York, who moved his family to Oregon in 1847-1848 to settle in present-day Monroe, Oregon. His son Ransom Amos Belknap (1820-1896) married Mahala Starr and fathered Lewis Franklin Belknap (1852-1948) and Webster Clark Belknap (1850-1937). L. F. Belknap attended Willamette University and then went on to become a Methodist minister. He is the member of the longtime Oregon family for whom the Belknap Residence Hall at Willamette University is named. Webster Belknap and his wife Ida Iola Clark (1855-1893) were the parents of Clark Russell Belknap (1883-1970), who attended Willamette University and became a lawyer in Seattle, Washington. His sisters Stella P. and Carrie N. Belknap also attended Willamette and played on the women's basketball team.
