Biographical / Historical

The American Association of Women (AAUW) Salem Branch was a significant organization that played a vital role in the women's movement in Oregon. The organization was founded in 1922 in Salem, Oregon, by Miss Frances Richards, Willamette University Dean of women. Originally, the meetings were known as a “town and gown”, where 44 colleagues and community members shared an interest in “furthering scholarships for women, cultural affairs, access to quality education, community service and international relations.”

The organization is part of the broader American Association of University Women (AAUW), which was established in 1881. The AAUW was a national organization that sought to improve the lives of women by providing them with education, training, and advocacy. The Salem Branch of the AAUW was one of the many local branches that were established across the United States.

The early years of the Salem Branch were characterized by a focus on education and social reform. The members of the organization believed that education was key to empowering women and promoting their social and economic advancement. They established scholarships, provided educational programs, and supported the establishment of schools and libraries.

The Salem Branch also played an active role in promoting social reforms, including women's suffrage, the abolition of child labor, and the improvement of working conditions for women. The organization supported legislation that protected women and children and advocated for the enforcement of existing laws.

In the early 20th century, the Salem Branch expanded its focus to include issues such as healthcare, civic engagement, and cultural programs.
