Biographical / Historical
Willamette University’s Arts and Sciences programs trace their origins to the institution’s founding in 1842. Over the years the unit has undergone several name and structural changes. For much of its history, the unit was known as the College of Liberal Arts (CLA), serving as the core undergraduate college of Willamette University. In October 2020 the university’s Board of Trustees approved renaming the College to the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) effective at the start of the 2020–21 academic year (though the new name was already in common use by May 2020 at commencement). In 2025, the University reorganized its Salem campus undergraduate programs in Arts and Sciences, Business, and Computing and Data Science under the name Willamette College, reflecting broader changes in the institution’s structure and academic identity. Throughout these changes the College has continued to serve as the principal undergraduate home for the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences disciplines at Willamette University.
