The Lila V. Swafford papers consist of report cards, tuition receipts, excuse blanks for Chapel, a newspaper clipping, and a photograph of an unidentified male. The materials date from 1899 to 1905. Also included in the collection is a letter from Willamette University’s Office of the Registrar and a copy of her academic transcript dated 1939.

Biographical / Historical

Lila V. Swafford was born in Salem, Oregon in 1882. Swafford was a Willamette University student from 1899 to 1905 and received a B.S. from the College of Liberal Arts in 1905. During those years Swafford served as vice president of her sophomore class and secretary-treasurer of her senior class. She was an active member or officer of several student organizations including: the YWCA, Ladies’ Chorus, Associated Students of Willamette University (ASWU), Philodosian Society, Girls’ Student Association, and Clara Coleman Sorosis. Additionally, she was a tutor for the Normal School as well as a “speedy” guard on the girls’ basketball team. According to Office of Alumni Relations records, Swafford received an M.A. in 1909. A letter from the Office of the Registrar to Swafford, dated December 1939, indicates Willamette had no record of the academic work she completed for her M.A. because “records for those years are not as clear as they might have been.” After graduating from Willamette, Swafford taught German at Salem High School for five years and served on the alumni board as vice president (1906-1907), Executive Committee member (1907-1909), and secretary (1909-1910). In 1910 she married Noah D. Moser and moved to Washington state where she taught at Tenio Union High School.
