Scope and Contents

The Viola Price Franklin letter collection contains letters and autographs collected by Viola Price Franklin. Most of the letters were written to either Viola or her brother, Charles W. Price, who was secretary of the Lotos Club, a literary society in New York. The letters were written during the late 19th century and early 20th century and are from a wide variety of people, many of them well-known. There are letters to Viola from well-known authors such as Louisa May Alcott, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Thomas Wentworth Higginson.

Viola Price Franklin also collected the autographs of authors. The collection contains letters written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Robert Browning, among others.

Letters from Zane Grey, Sir James Barrie, and William Howard Taft are among those addressed to Charles W. Price.

Biographical / Historical

Viola Price Franklin was a teacher, writer, librarian, literary critic, and collector of autographs during her lifetime. Her husband, Dr. Frank Franklin, was a professor of social sciences and then professor of library science and the Willamette University librarian from 1918 to 1936. During her time at Willamette University, Viola worked in the University library.

Overview

The Viola Price Franklin letter collection contains letters and notes from many well-known figures of the late 19th and early 20th centuries including Susan B. Anthony, Zane Grey, Dante Rossetti, Dorothy Dix, and Louisa May Alcott.
