Biographical / Historical

The Waltz family’s first graduates from Willamette University were Mary Caroline Starr, class of 1882 and Marcus Marcellus Waltz, class of 1884. Mary and Marcus were married during the graduation ceremony in 1884. Succeeding generations who attended the university went on to careers in medicine and law as well as serving in World War I and the Korean Conflict.

Marcus (Mark) Waltz, whose letters comprise the bulk of the correspondence in the collection, attended Willamette University from 1938 to 1942, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. He went on to serve in the United States Navy, including a tour of duty in Korea, before becoming a dentist.
