Biographical / Historical
The Institute for Continued Learning was established in 1992 by Kathy and Gene Fletcher as an avenue for retired and semi-retired persons over the age of 50 to continue their “intellectual pursuits and activities within the Willamette University environment.” Originally a guest program on the Willamette University campus, ICL joined Willamette to become the Willamette University Institute for Continued Learning in 2001.
ICL was based on the Elderhostel Institute Network model, of which Kathy Fletcher was the Oregon State Director for ten years prior to founding ICL. ICL began with 29 members and grew to its capped membership of 160 by 2012. Members attend bi-weekly classroom sessions that follow Willamette’s academic schedule. The Curriculum Committee designs each semester’s instructional program, covering a wide range of the liberal arts and sciences. In addition to current and retired Willamette faculty and guest speakers, ICL members bring their expertise to teach classroom sessions. Members also participate in on-campus events, social activities, and a field trip each semester.
