Historical Note
Willamette University was officially recognized as a Methodist institute in 1849 by the Oregon-California Conference. The University has since broadened its religious roots to welcome students of “all sorts and conditions” while valuing the “ethical and spiritual dimension of education.” The first University Chaplain was appointed in 1956 thanks to the establishment of an Atkinson fund by George and Lavina Atkinson. This began the Office of the Chaplains, which seeks to “work with persons of all religious persuasions – and of none.” The Office of the Chaplains has conducted various on-campus activities including the Bistro Rap, Convocations, and Opening Days events. With planning done by the Office of the Chaplains, Willamette University has also served as the location of the Oregon-Idaho Conference of The United Methodist Church, and Cone Chapel has been the home for many weddings and memorial services for the Willamette and Salem community members.
