Materials include background notes and drafts of Furtwangler's novel, Gift. Gift is set in Boston and New Brunswick. It is the story of a musically gifted mother, Felice, of a partially deaf child, Oliver. Furtwangler's preparatory work for this novel involved studying American Sign Language.
