Scope and Contents

The Administrative materials series is the core of the collection, containing information about the general activities of the library, as well as any special projects. The Collections sub-series contains information about collections and acquisitions, including gift records. The Archives sub-series contains information about the founding, funding, and management of the University Archives, including its beginnings with the Mark Hatfield papers. It also includes information about the university records management program, which is overseen by the Archives. The Systems and services sub-series contains information about public-facing services of the library and the technologies that support them. The Reports and general administrative materials contain written documentation of library projects and programs, especially annual reports. The Policies sub-series includes library policy and procedure documents, as well as position descriptions. These show significant development over time, as the needs of library users changed. The Meeting minutes sub-series includes minutes from staff meetings and library committees. The Correspondence sub-series contains correspondence pertaining to the running of the library, particularly with upper University administration. The Library building sub-series contains information about the physical space in the library, including discussions about needs for the new Hatfield Library building, completed in 1986, and subsequent renovations.

The Exhibits and events series contains information about library exhibits and special events hosted by the library. It also contains the winning essays from the Student Research Award, given by the library each year.

The Friends of the Library series contains correspondence, minutes, reports, and publicity materials from the Friends of the Library group. The Friends of the Library were separately governed, but supported the work of the library.

Biographical / Historical

The Hatfield Library is named after Mark O. Hatfield, a Willamette graduate and Oregon governor and senator. The Hatfield Library serves the College of Arts & Sciences, Claremont School of Theology, and the Atkinson Graduate School of Management. Originally part of what is now Smullin Hall, the library moved to its current location in 1986.

The Hatfield Library offers the Willamette community a collection of over 425,000 volumes. The library provides access to more than 100 databases and over 25,000 print and electronic journal subscriptions. As a participant in the Federal Depository Library Program, the library has received selected government publications since 1969. The Hatfield Library also houses the University Archives and Special Collections.

The library is a founding member of the Orbis Cascade Alliance, a consortium of academic libraries in Oregon and Washington that provides a variety of services including expedited borrowing of materials for students, faculty and staff of member libraries.

The J. W. Long Law Library was named after J.W. Long, a supporter of education and Willamette. His sons, Richard S. and William D. Long, both Willamette CAS graduates, felt the gift was a fitting tribute to the father who had a keen interest in technology and loved reading about the law.

Law students have round-the-clock access to the library and may reserve study carrels and study rooms. The law library is also open to the public on a more limited basis. Law Librarians provide research instruction in the library and in classes, guiding students and patrons through the more than 300,000 volumes and extensive online resources that include state and federal primary law sources as well as leading books, journals and other sources.

Overview

The Library records document the activities of the Willamette University Library and the Friends of the Library.

Arrangement

The Library records are arranged into three series: I. Administrative materials; II. Exhibits and events; and III. Friends of the Library. The Administrative materials series is further arranged into eight sub-series: 1. Collections; 2. Archives; 3. Systems and services; 4. Reports and general administrative materials; 5. Policies; 6. Meeting minutes; 7. Correspondence; and 8. Library building. The Exhibits and events series has two sub-series: 1. Exhibits and events; and 2. Student Research Award.

Separated Materials

Photographs of library activities have been incorporated into the Campus Photographs collection (WUA9999).

"Willy B. Kand," two zines published for Hatfield Library circulation student workers, can be found in the Student Publications collection (WUA023).

This collection has been processed and described at a folder level. The materials have been reboxed and refoldered for preservation, maintaining original folder titles and internal folder arrangements where possible.
